Reminder: New ABN Form Use Required
In 2011, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released an updated version of the Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) (form CMS-R-131). As of January 1, 2012, it became mandatory for providers to utilize this new version. The 2011 form is identical to the 2008 form, which may cause some confusion in migrating to the proper version; however, the distinction can be found on the lower left hand corner of the new version, where the release date of 3/11 can be found.
ABNs utilizing the 2008 version have been considered invalid by Medicare contractors since January 1, 2012. There is one exception to this updated form—2008 version ABNs issued prior to this January 1, 2012 effective date which are utilized as long-term notification for repetitive services delivered for up to one (1) year will remain effective for the length of time designated on the notice itself.
Please remember that this form is utilized by providers and suppliers compensated under Medicare Part B, along with hospice providers and religious non-medical healthcare institutions (RNHCIs) paid under Medicare Part A.
Keep in mind that this form will be replaced again in three (3) more years, as this form is considered to be an Office of Management and Budget (OMB) form, which requires replacement every three (3) years.
